You keep your home number for calls and texts, and data works as soon as you arrive provided you installed the profile before landing, since provider websites are blocked inside Turkey.
A local Turkish SIM or eSIM from Turkcell, Vodafone or Turk Telekom, or from budget MVNOs Pttcell on Turk Telekom and BiMcell on Turkcell, is cheaper per gigabyte for long stays and gives you a Turkish number. The catch is that putting a Turkish SIM into your own phone starts the IMEI timer, and on day 121 the device is blocked from all Turkish networks unless you register it for the 2026 fee of about 54,258 lira, which tourists usually cannot pay without a residence permit.
Quick rule: Trip under four months, use a roaming travel eSIM; relocating to Turkey with residency, get a local SIM and register your IMEI.

Which local network does each eSIM use in Turkey?

Is 5G available in Turkey yet?
Turkey held its 5G spectrum auction in October 2025, with Turkcell, Turk Telekom and Vodafone Turkey all winning frequencies. Commercial 5G went live on 1 April 2026, starting in the largest cities, with a nationwide rollout expected over roughly the following year. Before that date the country was 4G/LTE only, as 5G had been repeatedly delayed.
Will my phone get blocked while I am in Turkey?
A device works normally on Turkish networks for the first 120 days after a Turkish SIM is first used in it. On day 121 the network refuses service unless the IMEI has been registered, which costs about 54,258 lira for 2026 and generally requires a Turkish ID or residence permit. A roaming travel eSIM avoids this because it counts as a foreign SIM and never starts the clock.
Do these eSIMs still work after the 2025 provider ban?
Yes. In July 2025 Turkey's BTK regulator blocked the websites and some apps of many international eSIM sellers from being reached inside the country. The eSIMs themselves keep working, so the fix is to buy and install your plan before you arrive. Yesim's app is one of the few that has stayed reachable from inside Turkey.
Are the unlimited plans actually unlimited?
No, they use fair-use daily caps. Saily allows 5 GB per day at full speed, Airalo allows 3 GB, and Nomad allows 2 GB, after which speeds drop to around 1 Mbps until the next day. If you want to avoid daily throttling, a fixed-data plan such as 10 GB or 20 GB for 30 days is often the better pick.
