Travel Tips
If you are heading to the Dolomites or rural Sardinia, favor a plan that rides TIM or WindTre, which have the widest reach outside cities.
Near the Swiss border (Lake Como, the Aosta valley) set network selection to manual so your phone does not latch onto a non-EU Swiss network and trigger roaming charges.
Milan's M4 metro has 5G in every station and tunnel, but Rome's Metro A and B stay patchy underground, so download maps and tickets before you ride.
What it actually costs

What Italy data actually costs

Italy travel eSIM prices look random until you convert every plan to one number: the real cost per gigabyte. Here is what that reveals right now.

The cheapest plan at each size, 30 days

DataCheapest providerTotalPrice per GB
50 GBUbigi$29$0.58/GBGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10
25 GBUbigi$19$0.76/GBGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10

1 GBYesim$2.62$2.62/GBGet plan ↗🏷 15% off with code TRAVELCITY

Cost per GB rises from $0.58/GB at 50 GB to $2.62/GB at 1 GB. Buying a little more data than you expect to use is almost always cheaper per gigabyte than buying exactly what you need.

The "unlimited" trap

The same words, unlimited for 30 days, cover a wide price range, and most plans slow down after a daily threshold that the label hides.

ProviderUnlimited, 30 daysFair-use cap
Ubigi$39Not publishedGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10
Maya$49.993 GB/day, then 10 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code ATESIM
Airalo$643 GB/day, then 1 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗
GigSky$65.492.5 GB/day, then reduced, but not below 100 kbps sourceGet plan ↗🏷 15% off with code ATESIM
Saily$71.995 GB/day, then 1 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗

Unlimited 30 day plans run from $39 to $71.99, a spread of about 85 percent, for a label that means the same thing on paper. Check the daily cap before you buy, especially if you plan to tether a laptop.

Do not overpay for coverage you will not use

If your whole trip is in Italy, a Italy only plan is far cheaper per gigabyte than a Europe or global plan carrying the same data. Same provider (Nomad), same 50 GB, 30 days:

Nomad planPricePrice per GB
Italy only$35$0.70/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM
Europe$35$0.70/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM
Global$129$2.58/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM

A Italy only plan costs much less per gigabyte than a regional or global plan with the same data. Only pay for the wider plan if you are actually crossing borders on this trip.

Host networks

Which network does your Italy eSIM use?

This is the question that decides your real signal, and almost no comparison site answers it. Your travel eSIM connects to one or more local networks as a visitor, and that choice matters the moment you leave the big cities, because rural coverage varies a lot between them.

ProviderHost networkStatus
NomadIliad / WIND TreConfirmed
AiraloWind Tre (primary), plus two others the shop does not nameConfirmed
UbigiIliad and WindTreConfirmed
Sim LocalWind, TIMConfirmed
SailyNot publicly disclosedConfirming
YesimNot publicly disclosedConfirming
GigSkyFastest available network (published policy, not a named carrier)Confirming

Named hosts this pass come from Nomad, Airalo, Ubigi and Sim Local. Nomad names Iliad / WIND Tre on its shop, Airalo names Wind Tre as primary with two others unnamed, Ubigi names Iliad and WindTre on its partner list, and Sim Local names Wind and TIM on the 20 GB 30-day plan. Saily and Yesim publish nothing, and GigSky publishes a fastest-available policy rather than a carrier.

Coverage

Coverage by where you are going

  • Opensignal's December 2025 report named Vodafone Italy the most awarded operator, taking nine of sixteen awards, with the highest median 5G download speed at about 242 Mbps.
  • WindTre won the 5G Coverage Experience award (tied with Fastweb) and its users spent 28 percent of their time on 5G, the highest share in Italy.
  • TIM took the Consistent Quality award at 79.2 percent and has the widest 4G reach across the Alps and the interiors of Sardinia and Sicily.
  • Milan's M4 metro line carries 5G in every station and tunnel for TIM, Vodafone, Iliad and WindTre through INWIT's shared antenna system, while Rome's Metro A and B stay patchy underground on any carrier.
  • Italy launched commercial 5G in 2019, and coverage is now dense in cities and main tourist corridors, thinning in remote mountain and island areas.
  • On Sicily and Sardinia the same four national networks apply, with solid signal in towns and along main roads but weaker coverage on rural ferry routes and inland tracks.
Which one you want

Travel eSIM vs a local Italy SIM

Travel eSIM providers here resell the same national Italian networks, so data works on arrival with no shop visit or passport registration. Ubigi is the only one of the six that publicly names its Italian hosts, which are Iliad and WindTre; the others do not disclose, though they run on the same networks. For a week of sightseeing a 5 to 10 GB plan is usually enough.

A local Italian prepaid SIM makes sense for longer stays or heavy data use. Because Italy is in the EU, any domestic plan from TIM, Vodafone, WindTre or Iliad includes Roam Like At Home data across the EU at no extra cost, which helps if you continue to France or Austria. Registration needs your passport and takes a few minutes in store.

Quick rule: Under two weeks, use an eSIM; for longer or multi-country EU trips, a local Vodafone or WindTre prepaid with EU roaming usually wins on price.

An Italian domestic prepaid from TIM, Vodafone, WindTre or Iliad (or an MVNO like ho. Mobile, which runs on Vodafone) includes EU-wide Roam Like At Home roaming, and Vodafone's tourist prepaid bundles around 25 GB for EU use.

How it works

How a Italy travel eSIM works

A travel eSIM replaces expensive roaming with a cheap local data plan you activate in seconds. There is no plastic SIM and no airport queue. Roaming with your home carrier can run 6 to 12 dollars a day, so a week easily tops 50 to 80 dollars for service you already pay for at home.

Three things to get right:

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM before you buy.
  2. Install the eSIM at home over WiFi, but wait to activate it until you land, because the validity period usually starts on activation.
  3. Keep your physical SIM in the phone for calls and texts on your normal number.
Methodology

How we rank Italy eSIMs

Every plan on this page is sorted by real price per GB (total price divided by included data, normalised to USD), so a cheap-looking 1 GB plan cannot outrank a better-value 10 GB one. We refresh prices daily and only list providers with a track record of activating on arrival. We earn a small affiliate commission when you buy through our links. It funds the price tracking and never changes the order you see.

FAQ

Italy travel eSIM FAQ

Which network is best for rural Italy and the islands?

Opensignal December 2025: TIM took Consistent Quality at 79.2 percent, WindTre users spent the highest share of time on 5G, and Vodafone took nine of sixteen awards. That is network performance, not what your eSIM latches onto. No Italy shop this pass named Sicily or Sardinia on a plan, so we do not claim every plan covers the islands.

Do these eSIMs work on the Milan and Rome metro?

Milan M4 has 5G in every station and tunnel through a shared INWIT antenna system. Rome Metro A and B stay patchy underground on any carrier. Download maps and tickets before you head below ground.

Will my eSIM accidentally roam near the Swiss border or in San Marino?

Switzerland and San Marino sit outside EU roaming on the European Commission list. On a prepaid travel eSIM, silence is not a bill: the plan simply stops at the border. The charge risk sits with your home SIM. Near Lake Como or Aosta, set network selection to manual.

Which provider host networks are named in Italy?

Nomad names Iliad / WIND Tre on its shop. Airalo names Wind Tre as primary and does not name the other two. Ubigi names Iliad and WindTre on its published partner list. Sim Local names Wind and TIM on the 20 GB 30-day plan page. Saily and Yesim do not publish a host. GigSky publishes a fastest-available policy rather than a named carrier.

Is a local Italian SIM better than a travel eSIM?

For trips under two weeks an eSIM is simpler, with no shop visit or registration. For longer stays a local prepaid is cheaper per gigabyte and includes EU-wide roaming. A local prepaid line needs identity checks under Law 155/2005 (Pisanu), which applies to Italian-issued SIMs.

What are the unlimited plans really capped at?

Saily prints a 5 GB per day cap. Ubigi sells the cheapest unlimited 30-day row but does not publish a fair-use figure, so we do not print one. Check the plan page before you buy.

Can I use my eSIM data for tethering or a hotspot?

Nomad Italy shop: yes. Sim Local plan page: yes. Saily Italy shop: no hotspot restrictions. Airalo, Ubigi and Yesim did not state a tethering line on their Italy shops this pass, so they are omitted rather than assumed.
