Travel Tips
Near the Andorra or Gibraltar border, the roaming-charge risk sits with your home-carrier SIM, not your eSIM: Andorra is outside the EU roaming area and Gibraltar’s status is still being confirmed, so a prepaid Spain or Europe eSIM with no agreement there simply stops working — you get no data rather than a surprise bill. Keep data roaming switched off on your home-carrier SIM near those borders, and set network selection manually to a Spanish network.
Pick a plan that includes Movistar or Orange if you are heading into the Pyrenees, Picos de Europa, or inland villages.
Nomad’s Spain shop names Ibiza but hedges on overseas territories; the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are not named on the shops we checked, so check your provider’s coverage list before relying on one there.
What it actually costs

What Spain data actually costs

Spain travel eSIM prices look random until you convert every plan to one number: the real cost per gigabyte. Here is what that reveals right now.

The cheapest plan at each size, 30 days

DataCheapest providerTotalPrice per GB
50 GBUbigi$34$0.68/GBGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10
25 GBUbigi$19$0.76/GBGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10

1 GBYesim$2.50$2.50/GBGet plan ↗🏷 15% off with code TRAVELCITY

Cost per GB rises from $0.68/GB at 50 GB to $2.50/GB at 1 GB. Buying a little more data than you expect to use is almost always cheaper per gigabyte than buying exactly what you need.

The "unlimited" trap

The same words, unlimited for 30 days, cover a wide price range, and most plans slow down after a daily threshold that the label hides.

ProviderUnlimited, 30 daysFair-use cap
Ubigi$44Not publishedGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10
Maya$49.993 GB/day, then 10 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code ATESIM
Airalo$633 GB/day, then 1 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗
GigSky$65.492.5 GB/day, then reduced, but not below 100 kbps sourceGet plan ↗🏷 15% off with code ATESIM
Saily$71.995 GB/day, then 1 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗

Unlimited 30 day plans run from $44 to $71.99, a spread of about 64 percent, for a label that means the same thing on paper. Check the daily cap before you buy, especially if you plan to tether a laptop.

Do not overpay for coverage you will not use

If your whole trip is in Spain, a Spain only plan is far cheaper per gigabyte than a Europe or global plan carrying the same data. Same provider (Nomad), same 50 GB, 30 days:

Nomad planPricePrice per GB
Spain only$35$0.70/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM
Europe$35$0.70/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM
Global$129$2.58/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM

A Spain only plan costs much less per gigabyte than a regional or global plan with the same data. Only pay for the wider plan if you are actually crossing borders on this trip.

Host networks

Which network does your Spain eSIM use?

This is the question that decides your real signal, and almost no comparison site answers it. Your travel eSIM connects to one or more local networks as a visitor, and that choice matters the moment you leave the big cities, because rural coverage varies a lot between them.

ProviderHost networkStatus
AiraloOrange SpainConfirmed
GigSkyFastest available network (policy, not a named carrier)Confirmed
UbigiOrangeConfirmed
NomadOrange Spain and MovistarConfirmed
SailyNot publicly disclosedConfirming
YesimNot publicly disclosedConfirmed

Ubigi and Airalo name Orange, Ubigi on its published operator partner list and Airalo on its own Spain shop. Nomad names Orange Spain and Movistar on its shop. GigSky does not name a carrier and publishes a policy instead, connecting to the fastest available network. Yesim and Saily publish nothing, so pick those on price rather than on a network claim.

Coverage

Coverage by where you are going

  • Spain has four mobile network operators: Movistar (Telefonica), Orange Spain, Vodafone Spain, and Yoigo (MASMOVIL). Commercial 5G launched in 2020 and now runs in all major cities.
  • Movistar generally offers the widest reach in rural and mountain areas, which matters for the Pyrenees, Galicia, and small inland towns.
  • The Madrid and Barcelona metro systems carry mobile signal inside tunnels and stations.
  • Nomad’s Spain shop names Ibiza and then hedges on overseas territories. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are not named on any of the shops we checked, so we do not publish island coverage for them.
  • Andorra sits outside the EU roaming zone and Gibraltar’s status is still being confirmed; near either border a handset can pick up Andorra Telecom or Gibtelecom, where a prepaid eSIM normally just has no data — the roaming-charge risk sits with your home-carrier SIM.
  • High-speed AVE rail corridors have consistent coverage, though long tunnels can drop the signal briefly.
Which one you want

Travel eSIM vs a local Spain SIM

A travel eSIM is the quick option for a city break or a two-week trip. You install it before you fly, it runs data-only over one of the four Spanish networks, and prices are fixed upfront with no surprise bill.

A local Spanish SIM from Movistar, Vodafone, Orange, Yoigo, or a budget MVNO gives you a Spanish phone number, cheaper large-data bundles, and EU-wide Roam Like At Home if you travel on to other member states. It usually needs ID registration and a shop visit or delivery.

Quick rule: Short visit, buy a travel eSIM; longer stay or wider EU travel, buy a local Spanish SIM.

Spain's networks are Movistar (Telefonica), Orange, Vodafone, and Yoigo, and budget MVNOs such as Digi Spain, Simyo, Lowi, and Lycamobile resell those same networks at lower prices.

How it works

How a Spain travel eSIM works

A travel eSIM replaces expensive roaming with a cheap local data plan you activate in seconds. There is no plastic SIM and no airport queue. Roaming with your home carrier can run 6 to 12 dollars a day, so a week easily tops 50 to 80 dollars for service you already pay for at home.

Three things to get right:

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM before you buy.
  2. Install the eSIM at home over WiFi, but wait to activate it until you land, because the validity period usually starts on activation.
  3. Keep your physical SIM in the phone for calls and texts on your normal number.
Methodology

How we rank Spain eSIMs

Every plan on this page is sorted by real price per GB (total price divided by included data, normalised to USD), so a cheap-looking 1 GB plan cannot outrank a better-value 10 GB one. We refresh prices daily and only list providers with a track record of activating on arrival. We earn a small affiliate commission when you buy through our links. It funds the price tracking and never changes the order you see.

FAQ

Spain travel eSIM FAQ

Which network will my eSIM use in Spain?

Only two providers name a host on their own shop: Nomad lists Orange Spain and Movistar, and Airalo lists Orange Spain. Saily, GigSky, Ubigi and Yesim do not publicly disclose which Spanish network they use, so choose those on price and app rather than on a network claim.

Will I get charged extra in Andorra or Gibraltar?

Almost certainly not. Andorra sits outside the EU roaming area, and we are still confirming Gibraltar’s status, but either way a prepaid Spain or Europe eSIM that has no agreement there simply stops working: you get no data rather than a surprise bill. The roaming-charge risk belongs to your home-carrier SIM, so keep its data roaming switched off near those borders, and turn off automatic network selection so your phone stays on a Spanish network.

Is 5G included with these plans?

Most providers here include 5G in Spain where the host network has coverage. Spain switched on commercial 5G in 2020, and Movistar, Orange, and Vodafone all run it on the 3.5 GHz band in cities and larger towns. Actual speeds depend on your device and location.

Do these eSIMs work in the Canary Islands and the Balearics?

Nomad’s Spain shop names Ibiza, so the Balearics are at least named on one shop, but the same shop hedges on overseas territories. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are not named on any of the shops we checked, so we do not publish a coverage claim for them either way. Check the provider’s own coverage list before you rely on an eSIM outside mainland Spain.

Are the unlimited plans actually unlimited?

No. The plans labeled unlimited apply a daily full-speed cap and then slow you down for the rest of that day. Airalo caps at 3GB/day, Nomad at 2GB/day, and Saily at 5GB/day, after which speeds drop to roughly 1 Mbps or lower. If you need steady high speed, a fixed 20GB or 50GB plan can work out better.

Should I buy a travel eSIM or a local Spanish SIM?

For a short city trip, a travel eSIM is the simpler choice because you install it before arrival and pay a fixed price. For a longer stay, a Spanish phone number, or heavy data use, a local SIM from an operator or an MVNO such as Digi Spain or Simyo is usually cheaper and includes EU-wide roaming.
