What it actually costs

What Sri Lanka data actually costs

Sri Lanka travel eSIM prices look random until you convert every plan to one number: the real cost per gigabyte. Here is what that reveals right now.

The cheapest plan at each size, 30 days

DataCheapest providerTotalPrice per GB
50 GBUbigi$39$0.78/GBGet plan โ†—๐Ÿท 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10

5 GBAiralo$9$1.80/GBGet plan โ†—
1 GBYesim$4.36$4.36/GBGet plan โ†—๐Ÿท 15% off with code TRAVELCITY

Cost per GB rises from $0.78/GB at 50 GB to $4.36/GB at 1 GB. Buying a little more data than you expect to use is almost always cheaper per gigabyte than buying exactly what you need.

The "unlimited" trap

The same words, unlimited for 30 days, cover a wide price range, and most plans slow down after a daily threshold that the label hides.

ProviderUnlimited, 30 daysFair-use cap
Maya$49.99ConfirmingGet plan โ†—๐Ÿท 10% off with code ATESIM

Saily$71.99ConfirmingGet plan โ†—
GigSky$89.99ConfirmingGet plan โ†—๐Ÿท 15% off with code ATESIM

Unlimited 30 day plans run from $49.99 to $89.99, a spread of about 80 percent, for a label that means the same thing on paper. Check the daily cap before you buy, especially if you plan to tether a laptop.

Do not overpay for coverage you will not use

If your whole trip is in Sri Lanka, a Sri Lanka only plan is far cheaper per gigabyte than a Asia or global plan carrying the same data. Same provider (Sim Local), same 20 GB, 30 days:

Sim Local planPricePrice per GB
Sri Lanka only$32.25$1.61/GBGet plan โ†—๐Ÿท 10% off with code ATESIM
Asia$35$1.75/GBGet plan โ†—๐Ÿท 10% off with code ATESIM
Global$35$1.75/GBGet plan โ†—๐Ÿท 10% off with code ATESIM

A Sri Lanka only plan costs much less per gigabyte than a regional or global plan with the same data. Only pay for the wider plan if you are actually crossing borders on this trip.

Host networks

Which network does your Sri Lanka eSIM use?

This is the question that decides your real signal, and almost no comparison site answers it. Your travel eSIM connects to one or more local networks as a visitor, and that choice matters the moment you leave the big cities, because rural coverage varies a lot between them.

Only Ubigi and Nomad name their Sri Lankan host networks; Ubigi uses Hutch and Mobitel and Nomad uses Mobitel, while Airalo, GigSky, Saily, and Yesim do not publicly state which local operator carries their Sri Lanka plans.

Coverage

Coverage by where you are going

  • 4G reaches Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and the main tourist routes, with Dialog and SLT-Mobitel holding the widest footprint.
  • Commercial 5G launched in December 2025. Dialog has passed 1,000 5G sites and reports over 1.5 million 5G subscribers, focused on Colombo and larger towns.
  • The hill country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya and the tea plantation interior can drop to slower 4G or 3G in valleys and on train lines.
  • Southern beaches such as Mirissa, Unawatuna, and Weligama have steady 4G.
  • Hutch is the third national network and generally trails Dialog and Mobitel once you leave urban areas.
  • Bharti Airtel Lanka was absorbed into Dialog in 2024, so Airtel is no longer a separate Sri Lankan operator.
Which one you want

Travel eSIM vs a local Sri Lanka SIM

A travel eSIM is the simplest option for a short trip, and Sri Lanka plans are cheap. Saily starts at US$3.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, Airalo's Ella 1 GB is US$4.50, and Nomad's 1 GB is US$4. Ubigi and Nomad are the only two of the six that publish their host network, which matters here because Dialog and Mobitel have the strongest upcountry reach. If exact network is your priority, Nomad on Mobitel is the clearest single-country pick.

A local prepaid SIM from Dialog or SLT-Mobitel gives you access to the widest domestic coverage, including the interior and hill country where travel eSIMs on smaller hosts can weaken. Tourist SIM bundles are sold at counters in the Bandaranaike International Airport arrivals hall and at operator shops in Colombo. The trade-off is that you must register the SIM with your passport and queue on arrival, whereas an eSIM is installed before you fly.

Quick rule: For a one to two week city and beach trip, a travel eSIM on Mobitel or Hutch is enough; buy a local Dialog SIM only if you want the widest reach deep in the interior.

Sri Lanka's networks are Dialog Axiata, SLT-Mobitel and Hutch, local SIM registration requires showing your passport, and both Dialog and SLT-Mobitel run SIM counters in the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) arrivals hall.

How it works

How a Sri Lanka travel eSIM works

A travel eSIM replaces expensive roaming with a cheap local data plan you activate in seconds. There is no plastic SIM and no airport queue. Roaming with your home carrier can run 6 to 12 dollars a day, so a week easily tops 50 to 80 dollars for service you already pay for at home.

Three things to get right:

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM before you buy.
  2. Install the eSIM at home over WiFi, but wait to activate it until you land, because the validity period usually starts on activation.
  3. Keep your physical SIM in the phone for calls and texts on your normal number.
Methodology

How we rank Sri Lanka eSIMs

Every plan on this page is sorted by real price per GB (total price divided by included data, normalised to USD), so a cheap-looking 1 GB plan cannot outrank a better-value 10 GB one. We refresh prices daily and only list providers with a track record of activating on arrival. We earn a small affiliate commission when you buy through our links. It funds the price tracking and never changes the order you see.

FAQ

Sri Lanka travel eSIM FAQ

Which network is best for Sri Lanka?

Dialog Axiata and SLT-Mobitel have the widest coverage, especially outside the main cities. Among these eSIM providers, Nomad runs on Mobitel and Ubigi runs on Hutch and Mobitel, both good picks for upcountry travel. The other four do not publish their host network, so their exact coverage is harder to predict.

Does 5G work in Sri Lanka?

Yes, but it is early. Dialog Axiata and SLT-Mobitel launched commercial 5G in December 2025 after the spectrum auction closed. Dialog has passed 1,000 live 5G sites, but service is concentrated in Colombo and larger towns, so plan on 4G for most of a touring trip.

Will my eSIM work in the hill country and on the train to Ella?

Coverage exists along the main upcountry towns, but it thins in valleys and cuttings on the Kandy to Ella train line. Slower 4G or 3G is common in the tea plantation interior. Download offline maps and any tickets before you set off, since signal can drop for stretches.

Are the unlimited plans really unlimited?

Not at full speed. Saily gives 3 to 5 GB per day before slowing to 1 Mbps, and Nomad gives about 2 GB per day before dropping to 512 kbps. Airalo's regional unlimited plan caps at 3 GB per day. GigSky and Ubigi do not sell unlimited plans for Sri Lanka.

Can I buy a local SIM instead, and is it cheaper?

Yes. Dialog and SLT-Mobitel sell tourist data bundles at counters in the Bandaranaike International Airport arrivals hall and at shops in Colombo. A local SIM gives the broadest domestic reach, but you must register it with your passport and queue on arrival. For a short trip, an eSIM you install before flying is usually the easier choice.

Which providers confirm their Sri Lankan host network?

Only two of the six. Ubigi lists Hutch and Mobitel on its published network partner list, and Nomad states Mobitel on its Sri Lanka page. Airalo, GigSky, Saily, and Yesim do not publicly disclose which operator carries their Sri Lanka plans, so those hosts are unconfirmed.
