Coverage is strong across the Adriatic coast and the main cities, with 5G now reaching more than 90 percent of the population, but signal thins out in the northern mountains such as Durmitor and the Tara Canyon.

Travel Tips
On the coast all three operators give strong 4G and 5G, but signal drops in the Durmitor mountains and the Tara Canyon, so download offline maps before heading inland.
Check that Montenegro appears on the country list of any Europe regional eSIM before buying, since it is outside the EU and some plans leave it out or add a surcharge.
If you are also crossing into Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia or Albania, a Balkans regional plan from Nomad or Yesim can cost less than stacking single-country eSIMs.
What it actually costs

What Montenegro data actually costs

Montenegro travel eSIM prices look random until you convert every plan to one number: the real cost per gigabyte. Here is what that reveals right now.

The cheapest plan at each size, 30 days

DataCheapest providerTotalPrice per GB
50 GBNomad$35$0.70/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM
25 GBUbigi$55$2.20/GBGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10

1 GBYesim$2.96$2.96/GBGet plan ↗🏷 15% off with code TRAVELCITY

Cost per GB rises from $0.70/GB at 50 GB to $2.96/GB at 1 GB. Buying a little more data than you expect to use is almost always cheaper per gigabyte than buying exactly what you need.

The "unlimited" trap

The same words, unlimited for 30 days, cover a wide price range, and most plans slow down after a daily threshold that the label hides.

ProviderUnlimited, 30 daysFair-use cap
Maya$49.993 GB/day, then 10 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code ATESIM
Ubigi$77Not publishedGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10
Airalo$893 GB/day, then 1 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗
Saily$95.995 GB/day, then 1 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗

Unlimited 30 day plans run from $49.99 to $95.99, a spread of about 92 percent, for a label that means the same thing on paper. Check the daily cap before you buy, especially if you plan to tether a laptop.

Do not overpay for coverage you will not use

If your whole trip is in Montenegro, a Montenegro only plan is far cheaper per gigabyte than a Europe or global plan carrying the same data. Same provider (Nomad), same 50 GB, 30 days:

Nomad planPricePrice per GB
Montenegro only$35$0.70/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM
Europe$35$0.70/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM
Global$129$2.58/GBGet plan ↗🏷 20% off with code ATESIM

A Montenegro only plan costs much less per gigabyte than a regional or global plan with the same data. Only pay for the wider plan if you are actually crossing borders on this trip.

Host networks

Which network does your Montenegro eSIM use?

This is the question that decides your real signal, and almost no comparison site answers it. Your travel eSIM connects to one or more local networks as a visitor, and that choice matters the moment you leave the big cities, because rural coverage varies a lot between them.

ProviderHost networkStatus
Airalom:tel (MTEL)Confirmed
GigSkyNot publicly disclosedConfirming
Ubigim:tel and One MontenegroConfirmed
Nomadm:tel and Crnogorski Telekom (T-Mobile)Confirmed
SailyNot publicly disclosedConfirming
YesimNot publicly disclosedConfirming

Airalo, Nomad and Ubigi all name their Montenegro host operators, with m:tel common to all three and Nomad adding Crnogorski Telekom and Ubigi adding One; GigSky, Saily and Yesim do not publish a specific Montenegro host network.

Coverage

Coverage by where you are going

  • Montenegro has three mobile network operators: m:tel (around 43 percent of subscribers), Crnogorski Telekom trading as T-Mobile (around 34 percent), and One (around 23 percent).
  • Crnogorski Telekom switched on the country's first 5G in March 2022 and now reports 5G reaching more than 90 percent of the population, with 4G at about 98 percent.
  • One also reports national 5G above 90 percent of the population following its expansion under 4iG ownership.
  • Signal is strongest along the Adriatic coast around Kotor, Budva, Bar and Tivat, and noticeably weaker in the mountainous interior such as Durmitor and the Tara Canyon.
  • Montenegro is an EU candidate rather than a member, so it is sometimes excluded from or surcharged on Europe regional eSIM plans; Airalo's Europe and Eurolink plans and GigSky's Europe plan do include it, but always confirm the country list before buying.
Which one you want

Travel eSIM vs a local Montenegro SIM

A travel eSIM is the low-effort option for most visitors: you install it before you fly, it activates when you reach Montenegro, and it roams on a local operator with no contract and no trip to a shop. All six providers here sell data-only plans, so calls and texts run over apps such as WhatsApp. Prices start around US$4 for 1 GB and rise to daily-capped unlimited plans for longer or heavier trips.

A local prepaid SIM from m:tel, One or Crnogorski Telekom (T-Mobile) works out cheaper per gigabyte if you use a lot of data, and these are sold at the airport, carrier shops and kiosks. You need your passport to register the SIM, and you get a local number for calls and texts. This suits longer stays or heavy streaming more than a short coastal holiday.

Quick rule: For a week or two on the coast, use a travel eSIM; for a long stay or heavy data use, buy a local prepaid SIM.

Montenegro's networks are m:tel, Crnogorski Telekom (T-Mobile) and One, and the country sits outside the EU Roam Like At Home zone, so an EU or UK SIM used there is billed at roaming rates rather than domestic rates.

How it works

How a Montenegro travel eSIM works

A travel eSIM replaces expensive roaming with a cheap local data plan you activate in seconds. There is no plastic SIM and no airport queue. Roaming with your home carrier can run 6 to 12 dollars a day, so a week easily tops 50 to 80 dollars for service you already pay for at home.

Three things to get right:

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM before you buy.
  2. Install the eSIM at home over WiFi, but wait to activate it until you land, because the validity period usually starts on activation.
  3. Keep your physical SIM in the phone for calls and texts on your normal number.
Methodology

How we rank Montenegro eSIMs

Every plan on this page is sorted by real price per GB (total price divided by included data, normalised to USD), so a cheap-looking 1 GB plan cannot outrank a better-value 10 GB one. We refresh prices daily and only list providers with a track record of activating on arrival. We earn a small affiliate commission when you buy through our links. It funds the price tracking and never changes the order you see.

FAQ

Montenegro travel eSIM FAQ

Which network will my eSIM use in Montenegro?

Airalo and Nomad both run on m:tel, and Nomad also lists Crnogorski Telekom (T-Mobile). Ubigi uses m:tel and One. Saily and Yesim do not publish which Montenegro operator they use, so treat their host network as unconfirmed.

Is there 5G in Montenegro?

Yes. Crnogorski Telekom launched the first 5G in March 2022 and now reports coverage above 90 percent of the population, and One reports similar national coverage. 5G is easiest to find in the cities and along the Adriatic coast, while the northern mountains are mostly 4G or weaker.

Do Europe eSIM plans cover Montenegro?

Sometimes, so check the country list before you buy. Montenegro is an EU candidate rather than a member, which is why some Europe plans leave it out or add a surcharge. Airalo's Europe and Eurolink plans and GigSky's Europe plan do include Montenegro.

Do the unlimited plans have a daily cap?

Yes. Airalo and Saily give 3 GB per day at full speed and then throttle to about 1 Mbps, while Nomad gives 2 GB per day and then drops to 512 kbps. GigSky slows after roughly 2.5 GB a day, and Yesim applies a fair-use limit but does not publish the exact threshold.

Will I get a signal for hiking in Durmitor?

Coverage is strong on the coast and in towns but thinner in the northern mountains and canyons. Expect gaps around Durmitor National Park and the Tara Canyon. Download offline maps and let someone know your route before you set out.

Can I buy a single-country Montenegro plan or only a regional one?

Airalo, Nomad, Saily and Yesim all sell standalone Montenegro plans. GigSky covers Montenegro only within its multi-country Europe or regional bundles rather than a single-country plan, so it suits travelers visiting several countries.
