eSIM Guide: Mauritius
Everything you need to know
Network Quality
Good
Island-wide 4G from Emtel and my.t is strong along the coast and at the resorts, 5G is live but limited to towns and not guaranteed on eSIMs, and the central highlands interior can be patchy.

Travel Tips
Emtel and my.t both give reliable coverage along the coast; a provider that can use more than one local network, such as Ubigi, lets your device reselect if signal drops inland.
Do not count on 5G. Most travel eSIMs run at 4G/LTE, which is fine for maps and video calls over WhatsApp.
For a one to two week beach holiday a 3 GB to 5 GB fixed plan usually covers navigation and messaging; pick an unlimited plan from GigSky or Yesim only if you stream every day.
What it actually costs

What Mauritius data actually costs

Mauritius travel eSIM prices look random until you convert every plan to one number: the real cost per gigabyte. Here is what that reveals right now.

The cheapest plan at each size, 30 days

DataCheapest providerTotalPrice per GB
50 GBSim Local$70.25$1.41/GBGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code ATESIM
25 GBUbigi$59$2.36/GBGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10
20 GBYesim$37.55$1.88/GBGet plan ↗🏷 15% off with code TRAVELCITY
10 GBUbigi$22$2.20/GBGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10
5 GBSim Local$14.75$2.95/GBGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code ATESIM
1 GBYesim$6.60$6.60/GBGet plan ↗🏷 15% off with code TRAVELCITY

Cost per GB rises from $1.41/GB at 50 GB to $6.60/GB at 1 GB. Buying a little more data than you expect to use is almost always cheaper per gigabyte than buying exactly what you need.

The "unlimited" trap

The same words, unlimited for 30 days, cover a wide price range, and most plans slow down after a daily threshold that the label hides.

ProviderUnlimited, 30 daysFair-use cap
Maya$49.993 GB/day, then 10 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code ATESIM
Airalo$993 GB/day, then 1 Mbps sourceGet plan ↗
Ubigi$108Not publishedGet plan ↗🏷 10% off with code TRAVELCITY10

Unlimited 30 day plans run from $49.99 to $108, a spread of about 116 percent, for a label that means the same thing on paper. Check the daily cap before you buy, especially if you plan to tether a laptop.

Do not overpay for coverage you will not use

If your whole trip is in Mauritius, a Mauritius only plan is far cheaper per gigabyte than a Africa or global plan carrying the same data. Same provider (Airalo), same 20 GB, 30 days:

Airalo planPricePrice per GB
Mauritius only$48$2.40/GBGet plan ↗
Africa$43$2.15/GBGet plan ↗
Global$66$3.30/GBGet plan ↗

A Mauritius only plan costs much less per gigabyte than a regional or global plan with the same data. Only pay for the wider plan if you are actually crossing borders on this trip.

Host networks

Which network does your Mauritius eSIM use?

This is the question that decides your real signal, and almost no comparison site answers it. Your travel eSIM connects to one or more local networks as a visitor, and that choice matters the moment you leave the big cities, because rural coverage varies a lot between them.

ProviderHost networkStatus
AiraloEmtelConfirmed
GigSkyNot publicly disclosedConfirming
Ubigimy.t (Cellplus), Emtel and MTML (Chili)Confirmed
NomadEmtel (provider page, not independently confirmed)Confirming
SailyNot publicly disclosedConfirming
YesimNot publicly disclosedConfirming

Emtel and my.t (Mauritius Telecom) carry most travel eSIM traffic, with MTML/Chili as the third network; only Ubigi and Airalo publish their Mauritius host operator, so treat GigSky, Nomad, Saily and Yesim as unconfirmed.

Coverage

Coverage by where you are going

  • 4G/LTE reaches the great majority of the island, including Port Louis, Grand Baie, Flic en Flac and the west-coast beach resorts.
  • my.t (Mauritius Telecom) has the widest network footprint; Emtel is the main private operator with island-wide 4G and also serves Rodrigues and Agalega.
  • 5G is live: my.t launched in July 2021 and Emtel on 31 July 2023, but coverage is concentrated in Port Louis and built-up areas.
  • Most travel eSIMs connect at 4G/LTE speeds, and 5G access is not guaranteed on every eSIM plan.
  • Signal can weaken in the central highlands and the Black River Gorges interior, while coastal and resort zones stay reliable.
Which one you want

Travel eSIM vs a local Mauritius SIM

A travel eSIM is the simplest option for most visitors. You install it before flying and it connects automatically on landing at SSR Airport. Single-country Mauritius plans start around US$5 to US$9 for 1 GB and rise to unlimited daily plans from GigSky and Yesim. The per-gigabyte price is higher than a local SIM, but you skip the airport queue and keep your usual number for calls over messaging apps.

A local prepaid SIM from Emtel or my.t is cheaper per gigabyte and gives full 4G and 5G access on the home network. Both operators run SIM counters in the SSR Airport arrivals hall and sell tourist packs that bundle data with local minutes. You need your passport to register the SIM, and topping up is easy at supermarkets and operator shops across the island.

Quick rule: For a beach holiday a 3 GB to 5 GB eSIM beats hunting for a local SIM; go unlimited only if you stream every day.

Mauritius has three networks, Emtel, my.t (Mauritius Telecom) and MTML (Chili), and Emtel and my.t both run prepaid SIM counters in the arrivals hall at SSR International Airport (MRU).

How it works

How a Mauritius travel eSIM works

A travel eSIM replaces expensive roaming with a cheap local data plan you activate in seconds. There is no plastic SIM and no airport queue. Roaming with your home carrier can run 6 to 12 dollars a day, so a week easily tops 50 to 80 dollars for service you already pay for at home.

Three things to get right:

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM before you buy.
  2. Install the eSIM at home over WiFi, but wait to activate it until you land, because the validity period usually starts on activation.
  3. Keep your physical SIM in the phone for calls and texts on your normal number.
Methodology

How we rank Mauritius eSIMs

Every plan on this page is sorted by real price per GB (total price divided by included data, normalised to USD), so a cheap-looking 1 GB plan cannot outrank a better-value 10 GB one. We refresh prices daily and only list providers with a track record of activating on arrival. We earn a small affiliate commission when you buy through our links. It funds the price tracking and never changes the order you see.

FAQ

Mauritius travel eSIM FAQ

Which networks do eSIMs use in Mauritius?

Confirmed hosts are limited. Ubigi publishes that it uses my.t (Cellplus), Emtel and MTML, and Airalo runs on Emtel. GigSky, Saily, Nomad and Yesim do not publicly name their Mauritius operator, so their host network is not confirmed.

Is there 5G in Mauritius?

Yes. my.t (Mauritius Telecom) switched on 5G in July 2021 and Emtel followed on 31 July 2023, with MTML also holding a 5G license. Coverage is concentrated in Port Louis and the larger towns rather than every beach. Most travel eSIMs still connect at 4G/LTE, so do not assume 5G speeds on an eSIM plan.

Do I need an unlimited plan?

Only if you stream or tether heavily. For maps, social media and messaging, a 3 GB to 5 GB fixed plan covers a one to two week trip. If you want unlimited, GigSky throttles after 2.5 GB per day and Yesim applies a fair-use policy it does not publish, while Nomad and Saily sell fixed data only.

Will my eSIM work at the beach resorts and inland?

Coastal resorts and beach towns such as Grand Baie, Flic en Flac and Belle Mare have strong 4G from both main operators. Signal can dip in the central highlands and the Black River Gorges interior. A provider that can use more than one local network gives you a better chance of reselecting when one signal fades.

Can I buy a local SIM instead?

Yes. Emtel and my.t both sell prepaid tourist SIMs at SSR International Airport and in shops islandwide, usually cheaper per gigabyte than an eSIM. You need your passport to register. An eSIM is still more convenient if you want to be online the moment you land.

Do any providers only sell Mauritius in a regional bundle?

No provider here restricts Mauritius to a regional bundle. All six sell a standalone Mauritius plan, though Ubigi and Nomad also include the island in Africa regional plans and Saily offers multi-country options that cover it. A single-country plan is usually cheaper if Mauritius is your only stop.
