What it actually costs

What Indonesia data actually costs

Indonesia travel eSIM prices look random until you convert every plan to one number: the real cost per gigabyte. Here is what that reveals right now.

The cheapest plan at each size, 30 days

DataCheapest providerTotalPrice per GB
50 GBAiralo$49$0.98/GBGet plan โ†—

1 GBYesim$3.53$3.53/GBGet plan โ†—๐Ÿท 15% off with code TRAVELCITY

Cost per GB rises from $0.98/GB at 50 GB to $3.53/GB at 1 GB. Buying a little more data than you expect to use is almost always cheaper per gigabyte than buying exactly what you need.

The "unlimited" trap

The same words, unlimited for 30 days, cover a wide price range, and most plans slow down after a daily threshold that the label hides.

ProviderUnlimited, 30 daysFair-use cap

GigSky$65.49ConfirmingGet plan โ†—๐Ÿท 15% off with code ATESIM
Airalo$69ConfirmingGet plan โ†—
Saily$71.99ConfirmingGet plan โ†—

Unlimited 30 day plans run from $49.99 to $71.99, a spread of about 44 percent, for a label that means the same thing on paper. Check the daily cap before you buy, especially if you plan to tether a laptop.

Do not overpay for coverage you will not use

If your whole trip is in Indonesia, a Indonesia only plan is far cheaper per gigabyte than a Asia or global plan carrying the same data. Same provider (Airalo), same 20 GB, 30 days:

Airalo planPricePrice per GB
Indonesia only$34$1.70/GBGet plan โ†—
Asia$38$1.90/GBGet plan โ†—
Global$66$3.30/GBGet plan โ†—

A Indonesia only plan costs much less per gigabyte than a regional or global plan with the same data. Only pay for the wider plan if you are actually crossing borders on this trip.

Host networks

Which network does your Indonesia eSIM use?

This is the question that decides your real signal, and almost no comparison site answers it. Your travel eSIM connects to one or more local networks as a visitor, and that choice matters the moment you leave the big cities, because rural coverage varies a lot between them.

ProviderHost networkStatus
AiraloIndosat Ooredoo Hutchison, with XL/XLSmart on some devices (no Telkomsel)Confirmed
GigSkyNot publicly disclosedConfirming
UbigiIndosat Ooredoo and XLSmart (no Telkomsel)Confirmed
NomadTelkomselConfirmed
SailyNot publicly disclosedConfirming
YesimNot publicly disclosedConfirming

Only Nomad rides Telkomsel, the network to pick for remote and eastern islands; Airalo and Ubigi run on Indosat and XLSmart, which are reliable in cities and south Bali but weaker elsewhere, and GigSky, Saily and Yesim do not publicly name their host, so treat their outer-island coverage as unverified.

Coverage

Coverage by where you are going

  • Telkomsel reaches over 97% of the population and is the only network with dependable signal on remote and eastern islands such as Flores, Komodo, Sumba, and Raja Ampat.
  • Java and Bali, including Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud, have solid 4G across all three national networks.
  • Jakarta's central business districts and the MRT line carry consistent mobile signal, including inside the tunnels.
  • 5G is live but limited to parts of 56 cities and regencies, with Telkomsel running roughly 1,400 5G sites in places like Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, and Denpasar.
  • Indosat Ooredoo and XLSmart perform well in cities and south Bali but weaken on smaller islands and rural interiors.
  • Nusa Penida, the Gili Islands, Sumbawa, and inland Flores can drop to 3G or no signal on non-Telkomsel networks.
Which one you want

Travel eSIM vs a local Indonesia SIM

A travel eSIM is the simplest option for a Bali or Java trip, since you can install it before you fly and skip passport registration at a local counter. The catch is the host network. Four of these six providers ride Indosat or XLSmart or do not disclose their carrier, and those networks fade on the outer islands. Nomad is the one clear Telkomsel option in this group, which makes it the safer pick if your itinerary goes beyond the main tourist zones.

A local prepaid SIM gives you direct access to the carrier of your choice, including a physical Telkomsel tourist SIM for the widest reach. Telkomsel's digital brand by.U and XL's Live.On brand sell online-only plans, though both still require an Indonesian identity or passport for registration. Local Telkomsel data is often cheaper per gigabyte than a travel eSIM, but you trade away the pre-arrival setup and the convenience of activating before landing.

Quick rule: For anywhere past Bali and Java, get onto Telkomsel one way or another.

Indonesia's networks are Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and XLSmart, prepaid SIMs must be registered with a passport, and Telkomsel covers over 97% of the population; budget brand by.U runs on Telkomsel.

How it works

How a Indonesia travel eSIM works

A travel eSIM replaces expensive roaming with a cheap local data plan you activate in seconds. There is no plastic SIM and no airport queue. Roaming with your home carrier can run 6 to 12 dollars a day, so a week easily tops 50 to 80 dollars for service you already pay for at home.

Three things to get right:

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM before you buy.
  2. Install the eSIM at home over WiFi, but wait to activate it until you land, because the validity period usually starts on activation.
  3. Keep your physical SIM in the phone for calls and texts on your normal number.
Methodology

How we rank Indonesia eSIMs

Every plan on this page is sorted by real price per GB (total price divided by included data, normalised to USD), so a cheap-looking 1 GB plan cannot outrank a better-value 10 GB one. We refresh prices daily and only list providers with a track record of activating on arrival. We earn a small affiliate commission when you buy through our links. It funds the price tracking and never changes the order you see.

FAQ

Indonesia travel eSIM FAQ

Which eSIM uses Telkomsel in Indonesia?

Nomad's local Indonesia plans run on Telkomsel. That matters because Telkomsel is the only carrier with dependable signal across the outer and eastern islands. Airalo and Ubigi ride Indosat and XLSmart instead, which are fine in cities and south Bali but weaker in remote areas.

Will my eSIM work in Bali?

Yes. All six providers cover the main Bali tourist zones such as Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud, and Denpasar on 4G, and Denpasar has some Telkomsel 5G. Coverage can still drop on Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands if you are not on Telkomsel.

Is there 5G in Indonesia?

Yes, but it is limited. Telkomsel runs the widest 5G network across parts of 56 cities and regencies with roughly 1,400 5G sites as of 2025, and reported median 5G download speeds near 88 Mbps. Outside major urban centers you will mostly see 4G.

Do these eSIMs include a phone number for calls and texts?

No. All six providers sell data-only plans for Indonesia with no local number or SMS. You can still make calls and send messages through apps such as WhatsApp or Telegram over the data connection.

What is XLSmart and does it affect coverage?

XL Axiata and Smartfren completed their merger into XLSmart in April 2025. The combined operator holds about 25% market share and keeps running its former brands including XL, Axis, and Smartfren. Travel eSIMs that previously used XL still work under the XLSmart network.

How much data do I need for two weeks in Indonesia?

For maps, messaging, and social media, plan on roughly 1 GB per day, so a 10 GB to 20 GB plan covers most two-week trips. Heavy streaming or hotspot use points you toward an unlimited plan. On those, high-speed daily caps range from 2 GB on Nomad to 5 GB on Saily before speeds drop to about 1 Mbps.
